Aikido is the Japanese art developed by Morihei Ueshiba after a lifetime of study. It is commonly translated as the "way of harmonious spirit" or the "way of unifying energy" and some of its main characteristics involve using movement and timing to take an opponents energy and use it against them.

These classes are the Tomiki style which is one of the main arts we have taught at the dojo for many years with considerable success.

Tomiki sensei was a direct student of the founders of both Aikido and Judo; being highly skilled in both arts he founded his own style to combine the all the competitive benefits of Judo with the principles of Aikido.

Training encompasses striking, locking and throwing techniques as well as tanto (knife) and traditional weapons such as sword and staff.

Some of the many benefits of training include exercise, focus, enjoyment and building a 'keep going' attitude.

Although dynamic, Aikido is well suited to both men and women of all ages as it does not rely on strength.

We are proud to be sponsored by Shishida sensei of Waseda University in Japan, having had himself and several other senior Japanese instructors visit to teach and support our training at the dojo.
